Safe spaces: Why Queer-Friendly Lodging is More Than Just a Label
“It’s 2026, nobody cares if you’re queer.”
We hear this a lot.
We’d love it if it were the case, but the reality for LGBTQ+ travelers is much different.
Neutrality is a luxury the targeted can’t afford, and "staying out of it" isn’t a neutral stance…it’s a choice to let hate go unchecked.
Check out our Instagram Post about why we always book with queer-friendly brands.
Why We Still Need Queer-Friendly Spaces
While the Pacific Northwest is often a sanctuary, the global and national climate reminds us why visibility matters. Consider these facts:
In 2025 alone, there were 616 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in the United States.
Queer people are 5x more likely than non-queer people to be victims of violent crimes.
82% of LGBTQ+ travelers have reported feeling unsafe or uncomfortable while traveling.
Queer-friendly lodging is essential for providing stress-free travel. When hotels and short-term rentals are visible allies, we know we can look forward to an experience free from hostility and discrimination.
What Actually Makes a Stay “Queer-Friendly?”
It’s more than just putting a rainbow sticker in the window. When we research stays, we look for these six green flags:
Representation: Do their website and social media images include LGBTQ+ and gender-diverse people?
Policies: Do they have explicit, written policies protecting LGBTQ+ guests and staff?
Community: Do they partner with local queer businesses and Pride events?
Training: Do they have a trained, diverse staff that understands inclusive hospitality?
Reviews: Do they receive positive feedback from actual queer travelers regarding safety and respect?
